DELTA Module One:
Understanding Language Skills for Teaching
Content. This module looks at the theories behind how people learn languages and how they are taught. Module aims are to:
- develop candidates’ knowledge of historical and current theories of first and second language acquisition
- increase candidates’ critical awareness of approaches and methodologies and the way they are used in a range of English language teaching contexts
- extend candidates’ knowledge of language systems and language skills and the ways in which they are used
- increase candidates’ knowledge of learners’ problems in developing language skills and proficiency
- enable candidates to critically evaluate teaching and reference materials and resources in a range o fEnglish language teaching contexts
- increase candidates’ knowledge of the role and amethods of assessment

Assessment: Module One is assessed via a written examination. The exam is available twice a year, in the morning of the first Wednesday of June or December, and consists of two papers of 1.5 hours each with a 30 minute break in between.
Courses: Our Module 1 course is mostly online, over 20 weeks every year from June to December. The course has 4 face to face sessions on Friday mornings, including 2 mock exams and feedback/tutorial support.
