Who is CELTA for?

CELTA course participants come from all walks of life. On each course there is usually a range of nationalities, ages and reasons for doing the course. Examples: recent university graduates, qualified teachers of other subjects, professionals in other fields looking for a change of life / career, people who have been teaching English for a number of years without a qualification and feel it’s time they got one. CELTA caters for all of these needs, and having a good mix of people with different backgrounds and experience makes each course all the more interesting and rewarding for everyone. Many teachers of English with considerable experience but no formal qualification have taken the CELTA with us. CELTA is not only for people with no teaching experience!

What if English isn’t your first language?

If English is not your first language, you can still apply to do the CELTA course. We almost never have courses with native speakers only. Over the years candidates have come from: Italy, France, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Georgia, Greece, Albania, Lithuania, Morocco, Iran, Japan, Hungary, Brazil, the Philippines, the Dominican Republic, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Mexico. However, you will need to show that you “have an awareness of language and a competence in both written and spoken English which will enable you to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels”. This condition applies to native and non-native speakers alike.

We have devised a language test which you can try before deciding whether to apply or not. The test will give you a realistic idea of how competent you are in English.
